Thórsmörk (Þórsmörk), named after the Norse god Thor, is arguably Iceland’s most famous hiking destination. Nestled between three glaciers—Tindfjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and the infamous Eyjafjallajökull—this nature reserve offers an otherworldly labyrinth of ridges, canyons, and birch forests.

Why Hike Here?

Unlike much of Iceland’s barren volcanic landscape, Thórsmörk feels lush. The microclimate created by the surrounding glaciers allows Arctic birch and vibrant moss to thrive, creating a stunning contrast against the black volcanic ash and white glacier caps.

The Route

The trail begins steadily but soon begins a sharp ascent up the Valahnjúkur ridge.

“There is perhaps no better view in all of Iceland than the 360-degree panorama from the top of Valahnjúkur.”

From the top, you can see the meandering Krossá river carving its way through the glacial valley below.

What to Pack

  • Waterproofs: The weather here changes in minutes.
  • Hiking Poles: Essential for the steep, loose ridges.
  • Sturdy Boots: You will encounter sharp volcanic rock and potentially muddy sections.
